Dourogás highlights the strategic role of renewable gases in decarbonisation.

Dourogás believes that Portugal has the conditions to play a relevant role in the renewable gases economy, but considers it essential to accelerate the transition from ambition to the implementation of projects with industrial impact.

The position was highlighted by Nuno Afonso Moreira, CEO of Dourogás, Paulo Preto dos Santos, Executive Director, and João Filipe Jesus, Head of Corporate Finance, in an article published by Ambiente Magazine on the role of renewable gases in the energy transition.

In a context where electrification alone cannot meet the needs of all sectors, Dourogás highlights the potential of green hydrogen and renewable methanol as complementary solutions for decarbonisation, particularly in energy-intensive industries, heavy-duty mobility, logistics and maritime transport.

It also highlights the importance of making use of Portugal’s existing gas infrastructure to progressively integrate renewable gases, reducing the need to develop an entirely new system from scratch. This pathway, however, requires technical assessment, investment, and a stable and predictable regulatory framework.

Dourogás also advocates a decentralised model for renewable gas production, through facilities distributed across the country. This approach brings production closer to consumption sites, promotes the use of local resources, reduces logistical requirements and contributes to greater energy resilience.
