Dourogás highlights the strategic role of renewable gases in the energy transition

Nuno Afonso Moreira, CEO of the Dourogás Group, analysed the challenges of the energy transition and the strategic role of renewable gases in an opinion article published in Observador.

The article – which you can read in full here – highlights the role of gas as a complementary solution in an energy system increasingly based on intermittent renewable sources.

Among the main topics addressed are the recovery of organic waste for energy production, the reduction of external energy dependence, and Portugal’s potential to accelerate the development of the biomethane market through the use of existing infrastructure.

The reflection also addresses the main obstacles to the sector’s growth, namely the complexity of licensing processes, the need for greater regulatory stability, and the creation of market mechanisms capable of supporting investment in renewable gas projects.

Nuno Afonso Moreira also underlines the importance of biomethane and green hydrogen for industrial decarbonisation, particularly in sectors where electrification continues to face technical and economic limitations.

With this reflection, Dourogás reinforces its support for a more diversified and resilient energy transition, based on complementary solutions capable of responding simultaneously to Europe’s environmental, economic and strategic challenges.
