Dourogás Renovável secures the awarding of biomethane in Portugal’s first renewable gas auction.

In the first electronic auction for the centralized purchase of biomethane and green hydrogen in Portugal, Dourogás Renovável stood out as the only company to submit a bid for biomethane supply. As a result, it secured the awarding of 1,990 MWh per year, strengthening its position as a leader in the production and development of this important energy vector.

Promoted by the Directorate-General for Energy and Geology (DGEG) and held on January 23, 2025, this auction marks a crucial step toward integrating renewable gases into the public gas distribution and transmission network. The awarded biomethane batch is intended for injection into the distribution network, operated by the local Distribution Network Operator (DNO). The base price set for this renewable gas was 62 euros per MWh, serving as an incentive to enhance the value of biomethane production from existing biogas. This auction represents an opportunity to consolidate biomethane as a viable and environmentally responsible alternative, aligning with national and European decarbonization goals.

In total, 119,280 MWh of green hydrogen were also awarded, with the Wholesale Last Resort Supplier (CURg) acting as the sole buyer. The awarded green hydrogen projects, including those from the Dourogás Group, are intended for injection into the National Gas Transmission Network (RNTG) at high pressure, operated by REN.

Consistent steps are being taken to create a supportive ecosystem for the hydrogen economy in our country.

Dourogás Renovável reaffirms its commitment to the energy transition and decarbonization by investing in the production of renewable gases—such as biomethane and hydrogen—as a sustainable solution for the circular economy and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. This achievement strengthens our mission to continue driving the sector forward and developing innovative projects that contribute to a greener and more sustainable future for Portugal, promoting a cleaner and more efficient energy model.
